Borrowed Words

Words, we’ve spent a life time using them, years learning them and our education mastering them and forgetting others. And often words become like tissue, veiled things we use to cover ourselves with, only to discard without a moment of reflection.

Honored guests, peers, family members, professors, administration and trustees… I am about to speak some borrowed words, to you. Words, phrases and quotations that when spoken individually convey their own meaning but when adopted, re-intentioned and taken ownership of, just as I have, they suddenly have a new purpose. Borrowed words from: Martin Luther King Jr, Yoda, Pope Francis, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John F Kennedy, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Ian Lising, Cornel West, Noam Chomsky, Devorah Lieberman, Will Smith, Ernest Henley, Cessar Chavez, Eleanor Roosevelt and myself. I invite you to borrow some, reflect on others and discard the rest…

In a dark place we find ourselves, and a little more knowledge lights our way.

To live is to wrestle with despair, yet never allow despair to have the last word.

Because in the audacity of hoping, there is no greater power than that of love, community, us?

Aprendiendo a amar es el comienco y,

Learning begins when comfort ends.

Aunque nuestros caminos para llegar aqui allan sido completamente diferentes y unicos,

We may have all come on different ships, but we are all on the same boat now.

Their voices have changed our world. And it is not narcist to aspire for that same greatness…

Your voice can change the world.

We must not be afraid of hearing every perspective because in the silencing of one we empower and fuel the many, and there is nothing more lethal than a people united who have been denied their humanity…

If we do not believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don’t believe in it at all. It is always good to be underestimated. We are a society who is so divided, it is thought to be lost?

We must learn to live together as brothers and sisters or we will perish together as fools.

Unidos nunca podremos ser vencidos

Change is the law of life and those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.

You have to remember, fear is not real. It is a product of the thoughts you create. Don’t misunderstand me. Danger is very real. But fear is a choice.

And, Never forget that justice, is what love looks like in public and To be human you must bear witness to justice. Love genuinely, generously, compassionately and unconditionally

Fear death as long as you live life without an achievement for humanity. Without loving,

Se fuerte para que nadie te derrote. Se noble para que nadie te humille. Se humilde para que nadie te ofende. Sigue siendo tu para que nadie te olvide.

May we all continue to dream without borders.

Life is too short to dwell on what might have been.

Too many (people) in too many countries speak the same language, of silence.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

I invite you not to build walls but bridges, to conquer evil with good, offense with forgiveness, to live in peace with everyone.

Never forget that justice is what love looks like in public. And To be human you must bear witness to justice.

And WE are the master of our fate, We are the captains of our, human, soul.

somos los primeros pero no los ultimos

Never the less she persisted, never the less he persisted, never the less they persisted…

Never the less we will persist.
