Endurance, Persistence, and Resilience!”

El Residente from Calle 13 is one of my favorite artists. To commemorate the UN International Day of Peace I translated, wrote & virtually performed this piece titled “Endurance, Persistence, and Resilience!” It is part translation and modern adaptation of Calle 13, El Aguante song. You can find a video of the recording here. My reading starts at 1:25:35. Below is the text. Hope you enjoy!

—————————————————————————————————————————–

We are born to endure all the body can sustain
We’ve endure what has come before and we’ll endure what is yet to come
We endure and persist, even though we all have our seconds counted
Our body endures up to fifteen minutes being hanged
We endure lashes, having both arms chopped off
Fractures in any bone, and three weeks in a cast

We constantly endure the urge to use the toilet
To see Halley’s comet, we endure seventy years
We endure school, faculty, the institution, and the iron tower
When we are eating, we endure the desire to burp
The people of Yemen continue to endure famine
We endure three days to reach the moon.
And a billionaire’s $5.5 billion tour to space

We endure the coldest artic winds, and the heat of the tropics
With vaccine antibodies, we endure microscopic viruses
We endure storms, hurricanes, global warming
We endured Nagasaki, we endured Hiroshima
Even when we don’t want to, we persist through new laws and Texas court decisions,
We endure still being ruled by kings in 2021
We punish the poor and idolize the cruel
We endure being enslaved for the color of our skin,
We endure capitalism, communism, socialism, feudalism,
we even endure the corrupt playing coy
We endure the guilty police found innocent and the innocent paying the price,
And every four years, we endure an undemocratic electoral college

For what was and what could be,
For what we have, and what we are missing
For what is to come and for what is this moment,
let’s toast to endurance, persistence, and resilience!

We endure all types of pain, although it hurt us,
We endured Pinochet, we endured Videla Franco, Mao, Donald Trump, Mugabe, Hitler, Idi Amin, Stalin, Bush, Truman, Ariel Sharon, and Hussein.
We endured more than twenty concentration camps,
When you swim underwater, you can’t breathe, so you hold your breath
To build a wall, we endure the dehumanization of the other
Non-smokers endure the odor of cigarette smoke
We endure that Monsanto contaminates our food
We endure Agent Orange and pesticides
When we go on water, we endure seasickness
We endure minimum wage, unemployment, and no tax for the rich
We endured the Taliban and the US invasion
In the city of Pompeii, we endured volcanic lava
And within the rhetoric of humankind, we believe the lies, misinformation, and deception,
and no one endures the truth

For what was and what could be,
For what we have, and what we are missing
For what is to come and for what is this moment,
let’s toast to endurance, persistence, and resilience!

We tolerate the atheist, the Mormon, the Christian
the Buddhist, the Jew
We tolerate the pagan,
We tolerate those who sell bullets
and those who shoot them,
We endured the death of RBG, Toni Morrison, and Michael K. Williams
We endured many wars, Vietnam, the Cold War
The Hundred Years War, the Six-Day War

Endure the reparations, as they come for justice
Today our liver endures whatever our stomach invites

For what was and what could be,
For what we have, and what we are missing
For what is to come and for what is this moment,
let’s toast to endurance, persistence, and resilience!
